You can now prove your competence with Automotive Technician Accreditation

With the increasing complexity and sophistication of vehicles and a shortage of skilled individuals, there has never been a greater need for competent technicians.

Fully trained technicians are highly skilled professionals, Automotive Technician Accreditation has been developed to enable them to receive the recognition they deserve.

ATA is a voluntary assessment programme for technicians working in the retail motor industry. It has the support of organisations across the sector including; vehicle manufacturers, independent repairers, Insurers, Thatcham and the Sector Skills Council.

ATA registered technicians sign and are bound by a special Code of Conduct. They are issued with a photo identity card, included on a public register within the ATA website and there is publicity and point-of-sale material available.
A universal standard of competence

ATA is based on National Occupational Standards (NOS) to ensure that it meets the skills requirements of the retail motor industry.

To achieve accreditation, technicians must pass a series of practical assessments and an online knowledge test at an ATA Approved Assessment Centre.

In order for technicians to prove current competency within the Cosmetic Repair industry there are currently two competency levels:

Cosmetic Repair Technician

Cosmetic Repair Senior Technician

This accreditation route is valid for a period of 5 years (3 years post April 2012): and must be obtained via an ATA approved centre. Technicians will be required to undertake a one day practical assessment including an on-line test at technician level and a two day practical assessment including an on-line test at Senior Technician level.

The centre will advise the cost of the assessment*. There is a single accreditation fee of £50, which includes registration, on-line testing and individual photo identity card.

*Assessment fees may vary.

Currently, there are two centres offering ATA Cosmetic Repair at Technician and Senior Technician levels:

S&B Automotive Academy, Princess Street, Bristol BS3 4AG – www.sandbaa.com

Thatcham automotive Academy, Daytona Drive, Thatcham, Berks RG19 4ZD – www.thatcham.org

Rust and corrosion are glaring examples of what can go wrong when your car’s painted surfaces are chipped or scratched. Sometimes the fight against rust feels like an uphill battle; but if you can help avoid the cause, you may be one step ahead of the game.

Small stones and debris kicked up from passing vehicles can hit your car and chip the paint, exposing vulnerable sheet metal. In time, the exposed sheet metal can begin to corrode and rust, compromising your vehicle’s good looks and at the same time lowering its value.

Many automotive dealerships and independent installers offer a protective film to help guard vehicles’ painted surfaces from this kind of damage. Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film is made of tough, durable urethane film, yet it’s clear enough to be virtually invisible so your vehicle’s appearance remains unchanged.

The tough urethane film takes the brunt of damaging road debris, bug damage and weathering when professionally applied to painted surfaces, including the front end, side mirror backs, wheel wells, door edges, fenders, bumper areas and more.

3M was the inventor of paint protection film, which was first designed to protect helicopter blades from sand abrasion in the 1960s. Reformulated for automotive use, the film is available nationwide. Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film, an official NASCAR Performance® product, provides proven protection for passenger vehicles, classic cars, motorcycles and street rods, boats, semis, tractors and RVs.

Professional film installation is highly recommended and is available through many new car dealerships or by authorized film converters and trained applicators across the country.

The role of a technician working in this area has become a mixture of the three conventional bodyshop disciplines: mechanical/electrical/trim, panel and paint.

Following demand from the sector the specific ATA assessment has been developed, with three skill levels, and in alignment with the PAS125 standards.

With investment support from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES), the IMI, who governs the scheme, has been able to develop this new route via a collaborative approach with employers and training providers.

Industry partners who took part in the pilot included Autorestore, Dent Devils, Thatcham, S&B Automotive, GTG and Revive.
